Sciatica is characterized by pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which extends from the lower back through the hips and down each leg. Common causes of sciatica include bulging or herniated discs, spinal degeneration, and muscle strain, which can irritate or compress the nerve. Symptoms often include sharp pain, tingling or numbness in the leg, weakness in the affected leg, and difficulty moving. Sometimes, individuals experience these symptoms on only one side of the body, but they can affect the left and right side simultaneously or even alternate side to side. While sciatica is the most commonly discussed type of pinched nerve, it doesn't only occur in the lower back and leg. Pinched nerves in the neck can cause similar symptoms in the arms and hands.

A pinched nerve due to a herniated disc is the most common reason for spinal surgery. While it's true that there are some cases that do require surgery, we consider that to be an extreme solution that is best thought of as a last resort if conservative methods like Dr. Taylor uses at Sikeston Chiropractic are unable to provide relief. Very often we are able to remove the nerve compression that is causing so much pain, numbness, and/or weakness through adjustments and therapy, preventing unnecessary surgery. In the unusual instance that we are unable to get the results we are striving for and surgery is the only option remaining, Dr. Taylor has a good relationship with other specialists in the area and can assist in getting you to the right place to get the help you need.
